BC Duo Is Back

The Moose Jaw Miller Express have announced the return of Canadians Austin Russell and Todd Leavitt for the 2014 Western Major Baseball League season.

Russell, who hails from Victoria, BC, is finishing his senior season at McPherson College and last played for the Miller Express in 2012. During that summer his .309 batting average was fourth on the Millers, he hit eight doubles, one triple, and had 11 RBI’s. As of April 28th, Russell is fourth in batting with McPherson with a .331 average, he has eight doubles, and is tied for the team lead with 36 RBI’s.

“Austin is coming back to the Millers for his last year of WMBL eligibility after playing last summer at home in Victoria. The scrappy outfielder is a welcome addition back to Ross Wells Park, his attention to detail and senior leadership will be a huge influence on the newcomers,” commented Millers Head Coach Michael Hunt. “He’s a student of the game and takes poor performances personally. The more of that mentality you have within an organization the better everyone becomes.”

Leavitt is from Vernon, BC and is currently attending Mayville State University. Last summer for the Miller Express he posted a 1-2 record with a 6.81ERA in six starts, he struck out 33 and walked 20. While at Mayville this season, he has posted a 3-1 record and has a 3.97ERA in 22.2 innings (as of April 28th).

“Todd is a grinder on the hill. He returns to Moose Jaw with unfinished business on his mind after nagging injuries limited his appearances last summer but when healthy he was a stabilizing fixture in the rotation,” said Hunt on Leavitt’s return. “He has a tremendous work ethic and the players fed off of that when he was pitching. Not only is he a quality pitcher, but he’s a creative clubhouse guy, he’s a positive team leader.”

Russell and Leavitt will be with the Miller Express when they open the 2014 WMBL season Friday, May 30th at Ross Wells Park against the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets. Early bird season tickets are available now for $150 until April 30th, for more details call 691-1402.
