Millers Head In To Regina

After a pair of weekend rainouts and two days off to start the week, the Moose Jaw Miller Express finally return to the field on Wednesday in the Queen City. Moose Jaw travels into Regina to take on the Red Sox at Currie Field in the first meeting between the two squads during the young Western Major Baseball League season The Miller Express will be trying to build off their season opening 9-4 win over Saskatoon on Friday, while Regina is coming off back-to-back wins over Melville and sits at 2-1 on the year. “I’m just eager to get on that bump and show them what I’ve got this year now that I’m 100 per cent healthy,” said Todd Leavitt, who will be getting the start for Moose Jaw on Wednesday. Leavitt battled injuries during his first season with the Miller Express and went 1-2 during six starts, posting 33 strikeouts in 35.2 innings. During this past season at Mayville State, the Vernon, BC native went 3-1 in 14 appearances with a 3.82 earned run average. After getting set originally to face the Melville Millionaires on Saturday, Leavitt has had his season debut pushed back twice heading into Wednesday night. He said that hasn’t phased him. “I’ve been playing for years now and I just treat every day I wake up the same and start thinking about the start as the day comes,” said Leavitt. Regina has underwent some changes in the offseason with a new coaching staff led by Scott Douglas. Leavitt expects a different, but still similar attack from the Red Sox in their first meeting of the season. “They’re very aggressive on the base paths and they’ll swing at a lot of pitches,” said Leavitt. “I know they have a new face, new coaches this year, a new team, so I’m hoping to just go out there, get my feel early and see what they want to do with it.” Much like what Terry McNabb did during his eight-inning start on Friday against the Yellow Jackets, Leavitt will be looking to come right at the Regina hitters. “I want to get ahead in counts obviously, see what pitches are working best, but I just want to fill it up and get outs right away,” said Leavitt. Moose Jaw got plenty of timely hitting during their win over Saskatoon and they clearly be looking for that to continue heading into Regina. “Run support is key, that’s how we’re going to win,” adds Leavitt. “I’m going to go out there and compete, hopefully we can put up a crooked number to start and roll from there.” Wednesday’s trip into Regina starts a busy midweek for the Miller Express as they will host the Edmonton Prospects for games on Thursday and Friday night at Ross Wells Park. First pitch is at 7:00pm for all three games.
