Cornell Named WMBL Player of the Week

Moose Jaw Miller Express second baseman Derek Cornell has been named the WMBL Player of the Week. Cornell is from Ballwin, Missouri, and was a redshirt sophomore at NCAAA Division 2 powerhouse University of Central Missouri. At Central Missouri he is a marketing major with a 3.0 GPA, and earned 2013-2014 academic honor roll status.

Last week Cornell posted a .450 batting average in three games. He was 2-for-5 against Edmonton on June 6, and then went a combined 7-for-10 in two games against Okotoks. He posted an impressive .950 slugging percentage, he had three doubles, two triples, and a home run. He scored six runs, drove in seven, and stole three bases.

His best game came against the Dawgs on June 11th, that night he drove in four runs, scored three runs, stole two bases, all while hitting a double and two triples.

This is Derek’s first year with the Miller Express and he’s quickly making a name for himself as a fan favorite. Here in the Friendly City he is currently being hosted by Doug and Leslie Sheppard, who are long time partners with the Miller Express, Cornell has been a model billet as well as teammate within the clubhouse.

Derek Cornell is the first Miller to win WMBL Player of the Week honors, earlier this season Terry McNabb was named WMBL Pitcher of the Week.
