Wednesday Win Over Regina

June 18, 2015

The Moose Jaw Miller Express have found their mojo.

For the second straight night, the Express had everything working as they put another notch in the win column.

Led by a three-run home run by Marvin Malone and a solid start by pitcher Brad Danzeisen, Moose Jaw rolled to a 9-4 win over the Regina Red Sox at Ross Wells Park on Wednesday night.

It was the second straight win for the Millers and fourth in the past five games following their seven-game losing skid.

“Our bats are starting to come alive finally, our pitching has been great all year and they're still doing their job, but we're just finally getting the offence going and guys are getting big hits,” said Cornell, who had a great night at the plate.

Cornell and Chris Suarez each went 4-for-5 in the win and scored a pair of runs each. Suarez added a pair of RBIs as the Millers offence came to life in the win, collecting 16 hits to roll past the Red Sox.

“This was one of our better games, especially the competitive at-bats we had,” said Cornell. “We were working the count and being able to get that two-strike hit or that two-out hit to drive in the run, it makes a huge difference and kind of kicks them when they're down.”

After a rocky start to the game where he gave up two runs in the first inning, Danzeisen settled down to go six innings, allowing four runs — three earned — on six hits with eight strikeouts and just two walks.

It was his first win of the season in his third start.

“I just came out here tried to do my job,” said Danzeisen. “I just threw strikes, keep the innings with low pitch counts and let the team do their thing.”

This was the third time that Danzeisen has faced the Red Sox this season, so he said he felt comfortable working against their lineup and it showed.

“I knew what they were expecting and tried to throw the opposite,” he said. “I felt like I just knew their whole lineup up and down.”

With Moose Jaw leading 6-4 in the sixth inning, Malone smoked his second home run of the season to right centre, scoring three runs to make it 9-4.

The Millers scored at least a run in each of the first four innings, including putting up two in the second to go in front for good. They added two in the fourth as well.

The bullpen finished off the game with little resistance, as Mitch Gullikson and Grant Westmoreland combined to throw three scoreless innings, while allowing just three hits.

“Everything is just clicking right now,” added Danzeisen. “The offence and the pitching are doing well, everyone is doing their part and everything is just starting to click.”

The Millers are back in action on Thursday night as they make their way to Swift Current to take on the Indians. Those two teams will meet again on Friday at Ross Wells for Throwback Night with the Millers sporting vintage Regals’ jerseys for the game.
