Millers Going Retro June 19th

The Miller Express will be honouring Moose Jaw's baseball past on Friday night.

The Western Major Baseball League team will be sporting special edition jerseys that throwback to the Moose Jaw Regals teams from the 1960s and 70s. The night will include retro baseball music for the authentic feel at Ross Wells Park.

“We thought it would be a good to give a little shout out to some of the guys that played for many years, they're a big part of this team, we're around because of the teams that existed back then, including the Regals,” said Cory Olafson, general manager of the Miller Express.

The Regals played in the Southern Baseball League, which is a precursor to today's modern WMBL. They dominated the league for the better part of a decade, winning championships in 1961, 1962, 1966, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1974.

That era of team was inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013, along with Larry Tollefson, who was a key part of those squads. Tollefson would go on to represent Team Canada.

“They were a little before my time, when I came up, we were the Astros and before that is was the Devons, so the Regals go back quite a ways, but they had a lot of really good ball players,” said Olafson, who mentioned that his uncle played for the Regals.

For Friday night's game, the Miller Express have made up throwback jerseys that are modelled after the ones that Regals wore during the 60s and 70s.

“It's going to be awesome,” said Olafson. “I've been around 25 years now and we've never done a retro game, so it will be fun.”

The Millers host the Swift Current Indians on Friday night at Ross Wells Park. First pitch is at 7:05pm.
