Retro Night Spoiled, Millers Fall 7-3 To Indians

On a night where the Moose Jaw Miller Express honoured their past, the visiting Swift Current Indians spoiled the celebrations by handing the Millers a 7-3 loss.

Before the game the team unveiled their retro Moose Jaw Regals jerseys. The organization honoured the Regals, who claimed four championships in the ten years during the 1960’s. With the jerseys on display on the field during the game, fans bid on them through a silent auction throughout the game.

Swift Current touched Millers starter Tanner Spencer for two runs in the second inning but Moose Jaw was able to respond in the third on a two-RBI single from first baseman Ben Douglas.

Swift Current took a 3-2 lead after the top of the 5th and the Millers looked to respond in their half of the inning. With two out Douglas walked, loading the bases for catcher Jeremy Stidham. Indians pitcher Nelson Quark the count to his favor and then finished off Stidham with a fastball to end the threat.

In the seventh the Indians added a single to their lead and then took a 7-2 advantage in the eighth when they scored three runs off of reliever Mitch Gullikson.

Down by five going in to the bottom of the ninth the Millers made the game interesting. Miles Orscheln led the inning off with a single and then moved up ninety feet after a single from Andrew Wilson.

Tanner McAninch ground out to the shortstop for the first out, but he was successful in moving the runners to second and third.

Hometown boy Brennan Reidy walked to the load the bases for Derek Cornell, who then walked to cash in the Millers third run.

With the bases still loaded and one out, third baseman Chris Suarez came to the plate. On the second pitch of the at bat, Suarez hit the ball to the shortstop which started a 6-3 double play to end the threat and the game.

Tanner Spencer took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over seven innings while striking out six and walking two. Nelson Quark earned the win for Swift Current, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings of work.

Ben Douglas led the Millers offence, going 2-for-3 with two RBI’s, Swift Current’s offence was spread out as all but one batter in their original lineup didn’t record a hit and three players had multiple hits.

Moose Jaw’s weekend continues Saturday with the first of two in Medicine Hat, their next home game is Saturday, June 27 against Swift Current.
