The Moose Jaw Miller Express have their offence rolling.
After scoring 18 runs in two games over the weekend, the Millers put up double digits for the second straight night in a 12-1 win over the Regina Red Sox on Monday night at Currie Field in the Queen City.
The win was the third straight for the Millers, who now sit at 7-17 on the year and have moved out of the basement of the WMBL’s Eastern Division.
The night started with the two teams finishing off their game from June 14 with Regina taking a 7-4 win over the Millers. Regina scored three in bottom of the fifth inning and then added two more in the sixth for the win.
The Millers got their revenge in the scheduled game. They opened with five runs in the second inning and rode that lead the rest of the way before tacking on six runs in the ninth inning.
Right fielder Cutter McDowell paced the offence, going 4-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
The Millers also received stellar production out of their 8th and 9th hitters with catcher Zak Kellogg going 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs, while centerfielder Shoma Sasaki posting a 3-for-6 night with two runs scored and an RBI.
After getting the early lead to work with, starting pitcher Grant Westmoreland cruised to his first win of the season. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on eight hits with seven strike outs and three walks.
Michael Cartwright came on and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Travis Kuhn pitched a perfect ninth inning to seal the win for Moose Jaw.
Regina starter Landon Russo was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs — three earned — on eight hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out two.
The Millers will get Tuesday off before returning to the field in Melville on Wednesday to take on the Millionaires. They’re in Yorkton on Canada Day and then host Swift Current and Yorkton on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
