Winning Streak Snapped

The Moose Jaw Miller Express couldn’t hold their lead on Saturday night as they saw their five-game winning streak come to an end with a late comeback by the Swift Current Indians.

Swift Current scored twice in the seventh and twice in the ninth to erase Moose Jaw’s 3-0 lead and pick up a 4-3 win at Ross Wells Park on Saturday.

The Millers sit at 9-18 after the loss.

Moose Jaw’s only runs came in the second inning when catcher Jeremy Stidham hit a three-run bomb to put the Millers up 3-0.

Starting pitcher Tanner Spencer kept the Indians in check despite Swift Current putting the pressure on in a couple of innings. The Indians had runners on the corners with two out in the fourth inning, but Spencer got catcher Bodie Cooper to pop out to right field.

In the seventh, Swift Current started their comeback with a lead-off single by Liam Goodall. An error by left fielder Brooks Benson led to Goodall coming around to score and then a double by Kyle MacDonald cashed in another run for the Indians to cut Moose Jaw’s lead to one.

Spencer ended up going seven innings, giving up two unearned runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked two.

Goodall led off with a single again in the ninth and would come around to score on a groundout by Luis Rivas. Another double by Kyle MacDonald brought around another run to put the Indians in front 4-3.

Moose Jaw couldn’t mount a comeback in the ninth with Stidham reaching with a two-out walk, but third baseman Cole Distler struck out to end the game.

Mark Baughman was tagged with the loss for Moose Jaw going 1 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on three runs.

Swift Current starter Luke Wiechec pitched eight innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out eight and walked two. Ryan Pope picked up the save, pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Millers will try to get back into the win column when they face the Yorkton Cardinals on Sunday night.

The Millers beat the Cardinals, 6-4, on Canada Day in Yorkton. Cutter McDowell, Distler, Benson and Jackson Schnurbusch all picked up doubles in the win, while second baseman Dylan Blaha went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Kyle Sonntag picked up the win on the mound, going seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked four.
