Millers snap slide; Shutout Cards Monday
(Marc Smith, DiscoverMooseJaw.com) Wrapping up a seven games in seven days stretch, the Moose Jaw Miller Express went out on a high note on Monday night.
The Millers snapped a six-game losing skid with a 2-0 shutout win over the Yorkton Cardinals at Jubilee Park in Western Major Baseball League action.
Runs were hard to come by in the game as both starting pitchers cruised through seven innings.
Moose Jaw finally broke through in the eighth when Ben Dalke worked a bases-loaded walk to bring around the eventual winning run. An error by the Cardinals in the ninth inning allowed the Millers to add some insurance and secure the win.
Grant Westmoreland threw 7 2/3 shutout innings, allowing six hits, but striking out seven. It was just the second start of the year for the Millers’ veteran, who improved to 1-1 and a lowered his earned run average to 2.07.
Zach Fascia came on for the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up his third save of the season. He struck out one and allowed one hit.
Yorkton starter Bryce Mulcahy was stellar over seven innings, allowing just five hits and striking out nine. He walked one batter.
However, the Millers were able to get to the Cardinals’ bullpen as they worked five walks off reliever D.J. Depiero over the final two innings to score the pair of runs for the win.
Moose Jaw improves to 16-17 on the year with the victory, which got them back on track after a tough last week.
The Millers are off now for the next two days before opening a two-game set against the Millionaires in Melville on Thursday. They meet again on Friday and then Moose Jaw travels to Swift Current on Saturday to close out their week.
