Winning streak snapped in Weyburn

July 26, 2017

(Marc Smith, DiscoverMooseJaw.com)  An up-and-down seventh inning saw the Moose Jaw Miller Express go from three up to four down and an eventual 10-6 loss to the Weyburn Beavers on Tuesday night.

Moose Jaw scored four in the top of the seventh to take a 6-3 lead, but Weyburn answered in the bottom half with seven runs to jump in front by four to take the win.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Millers, who dropped to 21-22 on the year.

Starting pitcher Bo Sheridan had a stellar outing going early as he allowed just one hit over the first four innings as Moose Jaw built up a 2-0 lead.

Left fielder Pate Katechis opened the scoring for the Millers with a solo home run, his third of the season, in the top of the second.

Back-to-back singles to lead-off the third led to another run for Moose Jaw, who took early control of the game.

Weyburn tied the game up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and then took the lead in the sixth with one run to make it a 3-2 game.

Katechis and catcher Zach Fascia started off the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles. Third baseman Adam Cook cashed in Katechis with a single and Fascia and Cook both came around to score on two-run single by Travis Able. Right fielder Cutter McDowell drove in Able with a double to make it 6-3 for Moose Jaw.

All three runs in the frame came with two outs.

After cruising pretty well through the first six innings, Sheridan ran into trouble in the seventh as he walked the first two batters and then three straight hits scored four runs for Weyburn to put them in front 7-6.

Travis Edgar came on to replace Sheridan, but couldn’t stop the bleeding as three more runs came around to score before the inning was over.

Sheridan was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs on 13 hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 6+ innings of work.

Edgar allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout in one inning, while Arman Lakhani pitched a perfect eighth inning to give Moose Jaw a chance to comeback.

A double from Ben Dalke in the eighth was the only hit for the Millers over the final two innings.

Weyburn starter Garrett Waters surrendered six runs on 11 hits over seven innings to pick up the win. He struck out five and walked one.

Able was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Katechis, Fascia and McDowell all went 2-for-4 as Moose Jaw picked up 12 hits in the loss.

The Millers will look to bounce back on Wednesday night when they host the Regina Red Sox at Ross Wells Park. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
