Millers trail Weyburn 2-0

The Moose Jaw Miller Express are in a 0-2 hole coming back home for Game 3 after losing 14-4 to the Weyburn Beavers in Game 2 on Wednesday night.

Weyburn scored early and often on their way to the lopsided win and a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five first round series.

"We just weren't good enough," said Millers head coach Michael Hunt. "We just weren't good enough in a lot of different places today and it made it really difficult to play baseball."

The Millers have fallen behind early in both games so far in the series and Hunt said they need to find a way to get out in front on the Beavers.

"We have a top-four starting rotation in the league, we have a top-two back-end of the bullpen in the league, so we just have to give ourselves a chance to get to that back-end and hold a lead, but we've got to get a lead first," said Hunt.

The Millers and Beavers will play Game 3 on Thursday night (7 p.m.) at Ross Wells Park.

The Beavers opened Game 2 with a three-run home run from outfielder Wade Weinburger before the Millers had registered an out and it didn't get much better for Moose Jaw after that.

Weyburn added three more runs in the third before Moose Jaw's offence came to life in the fourth inning.

Outfielder Eric Marriott led off the fourth with a single and fellow outfielder Ty Schindel followed that up with a two-run home run to make it 6-2 after four innings.

The Beavers tacked on three more runs in fifth inning and the two sides traded runs in the sixth inning with shortstop Geordie McDougall singling in a run for Moose Jaw to make it 10-3 Weyburn after six.

In the seventh, Millers third baseman John Prudhom scored an unearned run, but the Beavers answered with four runs in the bottom half to seal their win.

Millers starter Michael Mommersteeg was tagged for seven runs -- four earned -- on six hits and two walks over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four.

Jesse Marks didn't fair any better as he allowed seven runs on ten hits over the next two innings, while Cortland Hampton finished off the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up just one hit.

Weyburn starter Daniel Crooks surrendered three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings. He also struck out six.

In other Western Major Baseball League playoff action on Wednesday, Swift Current evened up their series with Regina as the 57s beat the Red Sox, 7-5; the Edmonton Prospects took a 2-0 series lead on the Dawgs with a 10-8 win in Okotoks; and Lethbridge won 5-2 over Medicine Hat to tie their series at 1-1.
