The Moose Jaw Miller Express issued too many walks on the mound and made too many errors in the field Tuesday night in Western Canadian Baseball League action.

They lost 7-5 to the Brooks Bombers in a game that saw the pitchers walk eight batters, and the defence collect three errors in the field.

“The number one thing we need to fix is too many free passes,” said Express head coach Rich Sorensen. “I think our pitchers did a good job when we were in the zone, but unfortunately we gave them too many walks and we didn’t field real well and we gave them some free runs at the plate.”

Blake Gallagher gave the Millers a quality start on the mound, with only two earned runs allowed in six innings, while striking out eight and allowing only three hits. Unfortunately, he also allowed four walks while reliever Jaden Hofmann allowed four walks in two innings, plus a game-changing two-run home run to Brooks’ McCoy Pearce in the eighth inning.

The Express tried gamely to come back and had the bases loaded in the eighth inning, and failed to score a run. They also put the potential tying run at home plate in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t make it work out.

Sean Rydell of the Bombers got the credit for the five-out save.

“Hitting is the hardest thing to do in sports, and when you’ve got a guy (Rydell) who was throwing pretty good, and he’s their closer,” Sorensen said. “So you’ve got to take advantage of the opportunities you have, and we just didn’t do it tonight.”

The teams are back at it tonight at Ross Wells Park at 7 p.m.
